Gynecomastia Surgery-Correction of Crater Deformity | San Jose, CA

Correction of Crater Deformity After Gynecomastia Surgery

San Jose, California - Miguel Delgado, M.D.’s gynecomastia practice is now at about 40% for revision surgeries for patients that had their original surgery done elsewhere.

Crater deformity is when a surgeon removes too much fat and/or breast tissue, and fails to blend and smooth surrounding tissues, during male breast reduction surgery. This will leave the chest with a depression or crater like appearance.

Crater deformity is one of several reasons for the need of gynecomastia revision surgery. Other reasons include; not enough breast tissue removed, or none as is the case when the surgery is done by liposuction alone and only fat has been removed, leaving the breast tissue behind. Also, revisions are sometimes needed for scar revision, nipple revision, etc.

The experienced gynecomastia specialists have techniques for corrective surgery once the patient has healed from the original surgery. For crater deformity, usually the best choice is a “fat flap.” With this procedure the surgeon takes fat tissue that has its own blood supply and rotates it to fill in the depression.  Depending on the architecture of the depression, sometimes it is possible for the surgeon to use fat grafts or fat injections, also known as a “fat transfer.”

Revision gynecomastia surgery is unnecessary if you do your homework and pick your surgeon wisely. Make sure your surgeon is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery and specializes in gynecomastia surgery. Ask to see multiple before and after pictures of the surgeon’s actual patients.
