Allure Magazine Discusses the rise of Gynecomastia Surgery

Allure Magazine Notes Increase in Male Breast Reduction

San Jose, California - Quoting 2015 statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), Allure magazine comments on why men accounted for more than 40% of the 68,106 breast reduction procedures performed.

Allure magazine states that the past president of the ASPS, Scot Glasberg, noted this is the highest number of male breast reduction surgeries for men since statistics have been recorded. Glasberg attributes the lifting of the stigma of cosmetic surgery for men to reality shows and social media.

Breast reduction surgery for women has been around for decades. Women seek a breast reduction for different reasons than men. Women with large breasts have issues with back pain, neck pain, and grooving in their shoulders from bra straps. Due to the pain and discomfort for women, many insurance companies cover all or part of their surgery, not so for men. Female type breasts on men, in most cases, do not cause physical pain, and therefore, most insurance companies will not cover the procedure as they consider it to be cosmetic. However, gynecomastia specialist, Dr. Miguel Delgado, M.D. states the psychological pain female breasts on men causes can be extreme.

Men who have a mild case of gynecomastia are usually men who work out and want their pecs to be more prominent. Men with more moderate to extreme feminine breasts are anxious to feel more comfortable in situations where they may want to go shirtless. As men are learning about the solutions to their anguish, and seeing before and after pictures of men who have had male breast reduction posted on the internet, the numbers of surgeries climb. Additionally, as a bonus for men, recovery is fast, allowing them to return to work in a short period of time.
