The Best Season for Gynecomastia Surgery
|Before and After Gynecomastia Surgery|
There are many things to consider when scheduling gynecomastia surgery such as; taking time off work, arranging transportation after surgery, having a caregiver for a minimum of 24 hours, getting labs tests, prescriptions filled, etc. but another important decision is when to have surgery.
If you have flexibility, the best season is winter time. Wearing layers of clothing is not unusual or uncomfortable in winter; however, wearing a compression vest plus thicker shirts in the summer will be quite warm.
After surgery, you will be wearing a compression vest for 6 weeks. Dr. Miguel Delgado, M.D. has designed custom vests for his patients that are more comfortable and functional than other vests. For 2 or 3 days you will have drains that sit securely in special pockets instead of being held in place with safety pins. It is easier to hide the vest with drains under heavier clothing, but once the drains are removed, Dr. Delgado lightweight vests are well hidden under clothing.
Summer is a time when people enjoy the outdoors with such events as; pool parties, barbecues, and a day at the beach, etc. Men like to wear T-shirts, tank tops, or even go shirtless while soaking up the sunshine. Planning surgery in the winter months allows enough recovery time for men to participate in all of their favorite outdoor activities.
Dr. Delgado stresses to his patients that they need to take care of their new scars while they are still pink in color. Be sure to use a good sunblock of 30 SPF or more, and keep the young scars covered for at least 6 months and possibly up to one year to prevent hyperpigmentation, where they can turn permanently dark brown.
If your exercise program includes outdoor activities such as riding bicycles, jogging, playing basketball or volleyball, giving up a few weeks for recovery in winter may be preferable than the sunny days of summer.
